Check the bottom of this post if you only want to know how these events are relevant to this blog, if you want the full story, just keep reading.
As you may have heard Miami’s WPLG Local 10 news station came to Star Wars Celebration with the intent to, as their only explanation so far has been, bring a little humor to the event. Many of us know what it’s like when someone’s “only joking.” Many pictures were uploaded to a slide show that featured everything from the photographer making fun of the subjects without him even knowing about their costumes, how to spell “Alderaan” correctly, and that kilts come from Scotland and not Ireland.
But that’s not what got the attention of wired, the huffington post, or the examiner. What got their attention was how this lone photographer decided to cast over 30,000 Star Wars fans, their children, their friends, and their families: in a stereotypical socially awkward nerd fashion that none of us have probably seen since the late 90’s. From multiple ignorant jokes about people waiting in line for a career-less Mark Hamill when he’s had an incredible voice acting run, to bashing fans’ weights, costumes, and supposed “datelessness,” with many of their pictures obviously having been taken without their knowledge, it is without doubt the least professional report on a convention that I’ve ever seen. They’ve since taken the slideshow down, but…
To make matters worse, they tried to half-heartedly apologize to fans, got called out on it, and then attacked the people they were supposedly remorseful to by claiming that they “can’t please everyone.” After they took down their “apology” they began talks with the local 501st Garrison PR manager, then quickly banned him from their facebook page once he told people to take a break from airing their grievances.
Families from all over the world came to Celebration VI to have a good time among fellow fans and are indignant that their hobby had them ridiculed for absolutely no logical reason.
On this blog I like to think that I give Star Wars fans a little something to talking about when it comes to icebreakers. Therefore I’m going to make something of this shameful act and present the photos under a new light with new captions. Feel free to submit your own caption in the ask box with a description of the photo you want it tied to, all photos related to this event will be tagged “WPLG”. I would also appreciate it if anyone would send me towards where to find more of the photos because the original slideshow has been taken down.
Update: they’ve posted a second apology. This one rings much more sincere than the last one. The project on this blog will continue regardless because these pictures could use some positive captions and actual humor that hurts no one in the process.
